What are 2FA backup codes and how do I use them?

Last updated May 19, 2026Account & security

When you enable 2FA, we generate a set of single-use backup codes. They are your escape hatch if you lose your authenticator app.

  • Each backup code works exactly once.
  • They are stored encrypted in our database — you see them once at setup, never again.
  • Save them in a password manager (1Password, Bitwarden) or print them and stash them somewhere safe.
  • When you use one to sign in, immediately set up 2FA again and regenerate the backup code set.
Don't skip saving them
The single most common reason for "locked out of my account" tickets is "I enabled 2FA, never saved the backup codes, then lost my phone." Save them at setup or accept that you may need a manual identity verification with support to recover.
