Authenticator app vs. email codes for 2FA — which should I use?

Both 2FA methods work and both meaningfully harden your account. The tradeoffs:

| Setup | Install app, scan QR code | No app needed, code goes to your inbox |
| Sign-in friction | Open app, type 6 digits | Check inbox, type 6 digits |
| Recovery if you lose access | Backup codes | Email codes — easier if you can't reach your phone |
If you can install an app, pick the authenticator app — it's the right answer 95% of the time. Email codes are still way better than no 2FA at all.
